Mem Fox is the author of Where is the Green Sheep?
Mem Fox is the author of many celebrated books, including The Magic Hat, Koala Lou, Time for Bed, and, for adults, Reading Magic: Why Reading Aloud to Our Children Will Change Their Lives Forever. She lives in Adelaide, Australia.
Mem Fox was born in Melbourne on March 5th, 1946. She went to drama school in London in the mid-sixties, and in 1969 she married an Englishman. In 1970 they migrated to Adelaide, South Australia. Their only child Chloë, to whom Possum Magic is dedicated, was born in 1971 and is a journalist and a high school teacher in Adelaide.
Possum Magic celebrates its 21st birthday in 2004. It is the best selling picture book ever in Australia. Since its publication in 1983 Mem Fox has written over 25 picture books for children. Among her personal favourites are Koala Lou, Hattie and the Fox and Wilfrid Gordon McDonald Partridge.
She also writes for adults. The best known of her adult books, Reading Magic, is aimed at parents of children aged 0-5.
Mem Fox has been presented with many awards including the 1990 Dromkeen Medal for distinguished services to children’s literature; an AM in the 1993 Australia Day Honours awards, for services to the cultural life of Australia; an Honorary Doctorate of Letters from the University of Wollongong, Australia, in 1996; an SA Great award for literature in 2001; and the Australian prime minister’s Centenary Medal in 2003.
